How to hide photos on Android (and why hiding isn't enough)

Android gives you several ways to hide photos and videos from your gallery, most of them without installing anything. They are not the same thing. Some only tidy the view, some put a lock in front of the files, and only some encrypt them. Here is what each option does, and who it keeps out.

1. Archive in Google Photos

Select the photo, open the menu and choose Archive. It disappears from the main Photos view.

That is all it does. Google’s own help page says archived photos still show up in search, in any album they belong to, and in the folders on your device. Archive is for clutter, like screenshots and receipts. It is not for anything private.

2. Locked Folder in Google Photos

In Google Photos, go to Collections, then Locked, then Set up Locked Folder. Photos and videos you move there leave the grid, search and albums, and other apps on the phone can no longer see them.

The catch is the key. Locked Folder opens with your phone’s screen lock, and Google does not let you set a different one. Anyone who knows your phone PIN, such as a partner or a child who has watched you unlock it, can open the folder too.

Two more things to know. Backup to Google is optional; items you do not back up live only on that phone and are gone if you clear the app’s data or reset the phone. And nothing in the folder can be shared or edited until you move it back out.

3. Safe folder in Files by Google

Open Files by Google, scroll to Collections and tap Safe folder. You choose a PIN or pattern, and Google says the files are kept “using Android storage with encryption.” They stop appearing in search, other apps cannot open them, and screenshots are blocked.

There is no backup, though. Google notes that the “Back up to Google Drive” option is not available in the Safe folder, and warns against copying its files to a new phone. If you forget the PIN, the only way forward is a reset, which deletes everything inside.

4. Private space (Android 15 and later)

On phones with Android 15 or later, go to Settings > Security & privacy > Private space. It is a separate area of the phone with its own apps, which you install again inside it, and its own lock: either your screen lock or a different one. Inside, you can move photos and files in from your main storage, and they leave your main gallery.

When it is locked, the space and its apps disappear from the app list. Google is clear that it is not invisible, though: someone who installs apps on your phone or connects it to a computer may still be able to tell it exists.

5. Secure Folder on Samsung phones

To hide photos on a Samsung phone, use Secure Folder, under Settings > Security and privacy > More security settings (menu names vary a little between models). It is a separate space built on Samsung Knox, with its own lock (pattern, PIN or password, plus fingerprint if you like) and its own copies of apps, including a gallery. It requires a Samsung account, and it only exists on Samsung phones.

The .nomedia trick

You will see this one in a lot of guides. Create an empty file named .nomedia inside a folder, and most gallery apps stop showing the photos in it. It hides the photos from the gallery and nothing else: anyone who opens a file manager, or plugs the phone into a computer, sees them as normal.

Why hiding isn’t enough

All of these answer the same question: “How do I stop this photo showing up when someone scrolls?” That matters. But the harder questions are these:

What VaultIt does differently

VaultIt is built for those questions. Every photo, video and document is encrypted with AES-256-GCM, using a key made from a pattern that is separate from your phone’s screen lock. Without that pattern, the files are random-looking bytes, wherever someone finds them.

There is one honest trade-off: if you lose both your pattern and your 12 words, nobody can open your files, including us. That is what real encryption means. Write the words down somewhere that is not your phone.

Quick answers

Can I hide photos on Android without an app? Yes. Google Photos Locked Folder, Files by Google Safe folder, Private space on Android 15 and later, and Secure Folder on Samsung phones are all built in or come with most phones.

How do I lock photos on Android with a separate password? Safe folder, Private space and Samsung Secure Folder let you set a lock that is different from your screen lock. Google Photos Locked Folder does not.

Can someone find my hidden photos? With Archive or the .nomedia trick, yes, easily. With the locked options, they need your PIN or screen lock. With encryption, they need your key.
